Glenn Kirschner gets cited a lot on D Kos. Indeed, I have often seen him referenced as an authority used to defend the idea that Merrick Garland is in fact on the case, and that Trump and his crew of seditious felons will be indicted.
Alas, I’m not so sure. I’m worried that Garland thinks indictments would be “political,” that he believes his example of a professional, competent and independent department will suffice to heal our democracy. It wont.
It gets pointed out a lot, but bears repeating: Liberals want the system to work for everyone. Republicans want to blow up the system and install a permanent ruling minority. And so many Democrats and liberals respond to this ongoing threat by assuming the DOJ will act.
But even Glenn Kirschner is not so sure—and is greatly frustrated with the DOJ’s timidity. That timidity may cost us our democracy. We need someone with the stomach for the fight to helm DOJ. I’m very scared that Garland is not that person.
So let’s hope Garland proves my worries wildly wrong and that the indictments are on their way. But when even a DOJ partisan like Kirschner is worried about the (at best) very slow response of DOJ to ongoing events, then that makes me even more concerned. Are we going to lose democracy because we were too concerned with decorum and “politics” and supposedly independent and non-partisan professionalism to fight for freedom?
When you’re losing Kirschner, Mr. Garland, you, and we,* are in real trouble.
Here is Mr. Kirschner’s take on the recent revelations of witness tampering, and the DOJ’s so far pathetic response.
