On this day 59 years ago, I was awakened in a Belgrade youth hostel by the manager who, in broken German, was trying to tell me that John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. The memories of that day remain among the most vivid in my life.
The more than half century since has only deepened the significance -- both personal and historical -- of that day. All that has passed in our nation's history since that day -- including the madness that continues to haunt us from the all too recent past -- has made me feel all the more intensely not only what might have been, but also what may still be.
This day, for me, will always be a reminder that out there somewhere is still, as yet undiscovered, an American "New Frontier" waiting, at last, to be realized....
...And now, this November, 59 years later- especially after those four lost years - we just may return to that path and discover the New Frontier that still awaits us
