As reported by Bay City News and KPIX-TV, the San Jose City Council is expected this week to approve an ordinance requiring gun owners to purchase liability insurance and pay an annual fee on their weapons. The fee would be roughly $25 and also include additional city administrative costs. Mayor Sam Liccardo introduced two proposals last June after a Transportation Authority employee killed nine of his co-workers and himself. The mayor likened the insurance requirement to motorists having car insurance. “Certainly the Second Amendment protects every citizen’s right to own a gun. It does not require taxpayers to subsidize that right,” Liccardo stated.
