Today, in the Virginia legislature, Jim Crow received another well deserved and vicious beating. There were many who stood on the right side of history while many others “abstained” and clung to the past vestiges of sore loserism.
Others continue to hold onto current vestiges of sore loserism like the one we saw in Washington just three weeks ago. Today in the Virginia Senate, Amanda Chase was censured for a litany of ridiculous acts culminating in her full-throated support of the riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Yes, Jim Crow has been punched in the nose, but we still have a long way to go!
The vote ended up at 24-9.
Over in the House of Delegates, they finally voted to take down a statue of the foremost Massive Resistor in Virginia political history from Capitol Square, Harry Byrd Sr. (REMINDER: It’s 2021.)
We are right now in a transitional period in Virginia politics — where the New Virginia is pushing through the conventions of the Old Virginia Way (perfectly represented by Byrd and his legacy) that have for far too long held back progress. We’re no longer asking for progress; we’re demanding it!
Part of cashing in on the public policy demands we have includes running candidates in every single district currently held by Republicans so that they can’t simply think that the only accountability could come from a primary challenger. And we are on our way to making that a reality.
The very heartbeat of my political activism over the better part of a decade has been around energizing young voters and systemically disenfranchised people who have no faith that democracy can actually work for them because it truly has never been designed to. When I'm in office, I'm going to fight for the working class and for people who can't bankroll candidates on their own.
If you’re someone who is looking for someone to bring the fight to Republicans and to represent what we say we want our Party to look like, chip in $5.00. If you’ve only got $1.00, go ahead and send it. If you got $10,000, that’s completely legal here in Virginia because we have no campaign finance limits for state legislative races. Let's do this!
