Being anti-abuse and anti-abuser should be a non-partisan issue. We Americans deserve better than to be represented by abusers. Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono (D) agrees, which is why she says reports of alleged abuse by Minnesota Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison need to be investigated.
Ellison, the DNC co-chair, is currently running for state attorney general. Days before the primary, the son of his ex-girlfriend, Karen Monahan, said publicly that Ellison had been emotionally and physically abusive. He still won the nomination, but Monahan herself has continued to post on social media about her experience, sharing additional information, including message screenshots and health records.
In an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Sen. Hirono told anchor Jake Tapper, “I have been very clear that I make no excuses for anybody who engages in this kind of behavior. And, as far as Keith Ellison, these allegations need to be investigated, and appropriate action taken.”
It’s clear that reports of abuse need to be taken seriously. And as we call for an investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s past, we should want the same for Ellison. It’d be horrific to give more power to yet another abuser.
Bravo to Sen. Hirono for putting people over party.
