Trump trickster Roger Stone has threatened to sue venerated DKos alum emptywheel (aka Marcy Wheeler) for her work in uncovering his dodgy campaign practices over the last several years:
rogerjstonejr Whoever writes the Empty wheel has an empty head .I have never met Don McGahn in my life, played no role in Micheal Cohen’s Run Donald Run effort in 2012, the PAC I worked with was not dubious it was successful and lawsuits claiming voter intimidation by 5 Democrat State Committees were defeated in Cour t and those decisions were upheld by the US Supreme Court. The Empty Wheel is fake news and the demented woman who writes is going to her derrière sued
Marcy responds:
I’ve had some wonderful recognition for my work in the past — the RightsCon award for being an Internet human rights hero, the trust and support of my readers, some snazzy fellowships, fame for my pottymouth, the Hillman Prize. But this honor ranks right up there among the best
So what has Roger Stone all worked up? Turns out it is tied in with the recent New York Times Maggie & Mike Don McGahn stories. Over the weekend, emptywheel published a series of articles delving into McGahn (and McGahn’s lawyer) and Team Trump’s motives in pushing out this narrative through their favorite access journalists.
It gets kind of complicated, but the short version is that Wheeler believes one of the real reasons that the McGahn ‘obstructapalooza’ narrative is being pushed out now is to give the Team Trump PR operation the opportunity to get ahead of a much more potentially damaging story involving McGahn’s growing legal exposure. According to Wheeler, the almost exclusive focus on obstruction in these pieces is being employed as a shield for McGahn from campaign and campaign finance matters in which he played a role.
This is where Roger Stone comes in. It has been reported that the Mueller investigation is closing in on Roger Stone, and in particular on his dodgy (Marcy calls it rat-fucking) campaign tactics. Stone’s threat to sue Wheeler is over her reporting of Stone’s involvement with political PACs and Don McGahn’s oversight role back when he was an FEC Commissioner.
In any case, it seems that Marcy has kicked a hornet’s nest.
Any bets on whether Stone carries through on his threat?
Marcy seems ready for the fight:
So, at least according to this Instagram threat, Roger Stone is willing to be deposed to prove that my claim that his voter suppression efforts in 2016, efforts which paralleled those of Russian spies, weren’t “dodgy.”
My attorney is already popping popcorn in anticipation of that deposition.
I’m guessing, ahhhh…, no.
