Maybe it’s because I’m watching Mindhunter, David Fincher’s Netflix show, where in the first episode, Durkheim’s theory of social deviance is brought up and functions as the main theme throughout the series, but I keep thinking about sociopaths, like, just how many of them are there in this country? We now have a sociopathic president who surrounds himself with sociopaths; sociopathy is the prerequisite for being a Republican politician; and there are the millions of sociopathic Trump worshippers who cheer on every sociopathic act. We know all about them now, but what about all of the nameless people carrying out the orange sociopath’s directives? Like those ICE agents, for instance? Or the guards in the child prisons? Could you take a child out of a mother’s arms knowing that they may never see each other again? Would you be able to work in a child prison? How are they able to do these things? I think this is what scares me the most: how many fellow Americans are willing to do such things when told it’s their job, or their duty, or whatever? I suppose the Milgram experiment provides an answer of sorts, but still, it freaks me out that there are so many people willing to abuse children because it’s their job. What else are they willing to do? Just how sociopathic have we become in this country?
Maybe I should stop watching the show, because I’m seeing sociopaths around every corner.
