You could say the Beatles 'Long and Winding Road' led me to run for Florida State Senate District 4 .
It was my persistence as a cub reporter (yes, it's me in 1964 with the impressive bee-hive hair) that got me an exclusive interview with the Fab-Four (article) and established me for doggedness and determination as a reporter. Now I am taking that same doggedness and determination to North East Florida voters so we can fix our broken legislature.
Truthfully, I am a reluctant candidate. I filed at the last minute on June 6th.
But my newfound courage to run, despite my public speaking phobia, is rooted in the deep disgust I share with millions in our state and around the nation about the pitiful response of the Tallahassee lapdogs for guns interests to the Parkland High School massacre. This was my tipping point.
Our state capitol desperately needs a clean sweep of lapdogs who willingly protect the gun interests at the expense of the very lives of schoolchildren and thousands of citizens dealing with the epidemic of gun violence and murder.
During my 25 years as a journalist I tracked erosion of:
Hard-fought environmental protection
Worker protections
Voting rights
Civil rights
Women's rights
For over two decades a network of lapdog legislators for special interests scarred our state with the dismal bottom-of-the-barrel national rankings on:
Health care
Elder care
Crime
Education
and
Mental health
My demonstrated skills as a watchdog for the people are much needed in state government.
As State Senator I will fight to return government from one that serves special interests to one that serves We, The People and promotes the "General Welfare" as our Constitution charges.
