One bill cannot solve everything that needs to be fixed in our country. But we for damn sure need considerably better bills put forward to reverse the systemic inequality that has been baked and nurtured by the more conservative elements of our elected leadership. Business Insider reports that Colorado Democratic Rep. Jared Polis has plans to introduce the Students Over Special Interests Act which would in affect, repeal the GOP’s corporate tax cuts and move that money toward relieving some of the United States’ $1.4 trillion student-loan debt.
"The Republican tax plan was all about special interests cashing in at the expense of everyone else. My plan shows what a difference we can make for middle-class Americans for even less cost," Polis said in a statement obtained by Business Insider. "So many people go to school, get a job, and work hard but still struggle to get ahead because they are weighted down by student loans. It's time to help them get out from the mountain of debt they are under."
"The good news is if we repeal the Republicans' sweetheart deals for corporations, we can cancel out all student-loan debt, make college more affordable for future students, and still have money left over to reduce our deficit," said Polis, who serves as the ranking Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee's subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development.
So far, the GOP tax cuts have done every single thing that everybody not named Donald Trump or Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell said they would do. They’ve further lined the pockets of the top .1 percent of our country while sapping trillions from the majority of American tax payers—with nothing to show. The GOP and Trump’s “leadership” is filled with people who make money preying on young people, while working to make sure they will face no consequences.
The Students Over Special Interests Act won’t go anywhere in this craven Republican Congress; but the attempt is important. Republican pundits and officials will speak into microphones and tell the American public that this is just “political theater” being performed by the Democratic Party in an election year. And they will be right. This is a demonstration by the Democratic Party to tell their consitutency as well as anyone else listening, that they agree with the majority of American people and don’t like scam tax cuts for the rich with no relief for student debt.
When Democrats take back the Congress and when Democrats regain control of our country’s ship, we the people will hold them accountable to enact some of the promises they are making through their demonstrations right now. That’s the social contract. That’s how Democracy is supposed to work. This is something that many politicians on the Democratic side have forgotten and something that virtually every Republican seems to never have had any interest in.
