Last night we were entertained and further enlightened with a stellar performance by Las Cafeteras, a band of Angelenos from E-LA with immigrant roots. They are described in their bio as “immigrant children remixing roots music, telling modern day stories with what LA Times has called a ‘uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock … Live, they’re magnetic.’” And truly they were magnetic. The venue was the Edmonds Center for the Arts whose attendance for the season run of shows is significantly composed of a geriatric-leaning crowd. Las Cafeteras had the geezers up on their feet and moving along with the zapateado dancing. But Las Cafeteras offers much more in their social message themes of racial injustice, gun violence, and immigration; a message so well received by the audience here in our bucolic town of Edmonds, Washington.
