Virginia Beach Democratic candidates held a press conference to speak out about Charlettesville
Dear Delegate Knight:
I’ve been hoping for some time that it wouldn’t be necessary for me to write this letter. But as last weekend’s events in Charlottesville continue to roil our communities, I find myself increasingly concerned and troubled that you haven’t weighed in yet on one of the starkest moral questions that we here in Virginia face today.
White supremacy and Nazism have no place in America. Period. As you and I compete to represent the 81st District in the House of Delegates next year, there are obviously many issues on which we are going to disagree but surely this cannot be one of them. I believe what took place in Charlottesville demands that we raise our voices as one in condemnation of a malignant ideology that is as morally wrong as any we’ve ever seen touted on American streets.
Delegate Knight, can you and I agree that there aren’t “many sides” to the events that transpired in the streets of Charlottesville? And that when it comes to white supremacists and Nazi sympathizers, there is no room for a partisan divide? Hate and intolerance are profoundly un-American values. They are equally abhorrent to both Republicans and Democrats, equally unacceptable to conservatives and progressives.
So, I am writing to ask you to join me in speaking out against the groups who brought their hate to the streets of Charlottesville last weekend and against any political leader who tries to create a false equivalence between un-American hate groups and those who would protest against them. The people of the 81st District have a right to hear what you have to say about all of this. I don’t know why you’ve chosen to wait so long before speaking out but I am urging you to do the right thing and to speak out now in support of values that transcend partisanship, values that can only be described as “American.”
Yours truly,
Kimberly Anne Tucker
(I am the Democratic candidate in the 81st District for Virginia’s House of Delegates.)
