AARON L. SEAL, died October 1, 2006, aged 23
The father of a Marine reservist killed by sniper fire in Iraq told mourners it took all his courage to stand up and speak at his son's funeral Saturday.
But "it's nothing compared to the courage my son had," David Dunn said at the service for his son, Cpl. Aaron Seal, 23. "He is my hero."
Back at the church, Dunn had spoken of his son's tombstone and how a dash was all that separated his son's date of birth from his date of death.
"Everything you've done on earth is that dash," Dunn said.

Little Mia Nelson said goodbye to her hero dad in silence yesterday, the tearful tot choked by emotion as she grasped a microphone. Holding her mom's hand, speaking about her soldier dad Mario Nelson at his Brooklyn funeral service proved too much for the 3-year-old. Instead, she let mom do the talking.

JOE A. NARVAEZ, died October 2, 2006, aged 25
"When you don't have a lot and aren't going to college after you graduate, the only option for sure is to join the service," former teammate Philip Lucio said Friday. "Even though it's a tough life, that's a guaranteed paycheck."
Jaime Contreras, who graduated from Kennedy with Narvaez in 2000 and also played football with him, concurred. "Joe joined the service to make a difference," he said. "Not only for the country but for himself. It's tough to get out of the West Side."

JONATHAN ROJAS, died October 3, 2006, aged 27
Prayers were uttered. The casket was blessed again. Three rounds were fired into the air in commemoration, their deafening bangs crackling amid the serene grounds.
White doves were released, soaring through the air above the grave site. The cries from the Rojas family members and other mourners grew louder and more pained.
Men and women alike dried their eyes as they passed by Rojas' coffin and consoled his family.
And then Rojas' body was lowered into the ground. Mourners released white roses into the grave. Rojas' wife, Tasha, kissed the last white rose, and with full-bodied sobs, dropped it into the grave of her fallen husband.
This wasn't how Jonathan Rojas was supposed to come home.

GEORGE OBOURN, died October 4, 2006, aged 20
GEORGE OBOURN was unmarried. He had last seen his family in June, at his older brother's wedding. But it had been even longer since he saw his best friend, Kristofer Walker. He and Kris had been inseparable in high school. They were in the school band together, spent endless hours playing video games together, and talked of joining the army together while downing a pizza at Monicals, the local pizza joint. Finally, they did join the army together, and were stationed together for a year. After that, their duties separated them, but they still saw each other when they could. And both still planned to become police officers together following the Army. So George Obourn may have been thinking of his friend Kris (on the day he died). But no one knows. Nor does anyone know if George Obourn had learned that Kris had died the day earlier, killed by a roadside bomb.

BRANDON S. ASBURY, died October 7, 2006, aged 21
"I never managed to catch him during a serious moment, because he made sure to keep such a joyous demeanor no matter the circumstances. The most respectable jester you've ever seen. He was also a charmer, and very sweet toward the opposite sex, so as you can imagine he was popular with the ladies," said Branam, now a student at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. "I've never heard anyone say an unkind word against him, and I don't think anyone could force out an insult either."
Taking a phrase from a comical trucker's hat he owned, Asbury would use "Gooder than Snuff" to get a chuckle even when times were tough, his sister said. "He'd make you laugh so hard that you cried," Perdue said. "You'd bust your sides laughing at him."

CARL W. JOHNSON, II, died October 7, 2006, aged 21
In some ways, memorial services in Iraq are similar to the ones at Fort Lewis several days later - the playing of taps, the reading of Scripture, the shedding of tears. But there's one big difference: Some of these mourners had just returned from patrols in the same Mosul streets where Johnson died Saturday afternoon. Some would return to those streets within hours.
The men of Alpha Company said they loved Johnson because nothing could get him down. He was always joking and laughing, clearly in love with life, they said. "Being around him always brought a smile to my face," said Hoffman, choking up and struggling to speak. "And I thank him for that. Because there were many times I needed it."

JEREMY SCOTT SANDVICK MONROE, died October 8, 2006, aged 20
Maybe when they lay Jeremy Monroe in the ground on Monday morning Doug Lekang will believe his friend is gone.
Today, he simply can't. Today, it doesn't seem possible.
"He was the sort of guy, if you were having a bad day, he'd be there for you," Paul said. "It didn't matter what sort of day he was having. He'd be there to sort of take care of you."
During his return to Montana this past summer, Monroe impressed on friends like Lekang the importance of living each day to its fullest.
"He wanted me to understand how important this day was for us," Lekang recalled. "I think the fact that he'd been to war, the fact that everything was so in your face there, this idea that you could be killed at any minute, it really got to him."
Ominously, Monroe even made plans for his own burial while he was home this last time.
"He was pretty clear that he felt he was doing his duty, but it was also clear that he didn't really want to go back to war," Paul said. "He said it was something nobody could really feel good about doing."

DEREK W. JONES, died October 8, 2006, aged 21
Two weeks ago, U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Derek W. Jones of Salem sent his mother an e-mail and told her it was a good day.
Good because his 2-year-old daughter was thriving, and he couldn't wait to see her again when he returned from Iraq. Good because he held on to his memories of Laurie Hadden's trip to see her son last month while he was on leave in Hawaii.
And good because the bomb that landed next to him earlier didn't explode. "No one died that day, so it was a good day," he told her.

LEEBERNARD E. CHAVIS, died October 14, 2006, aged 21
"Reach for remains!" a voice barked.
The sight of the coffin, draped in a large American flag and carried toward the plane by six pallbearers, slowly distorted the faces of 18 members of Chavis's sub-unit, known as a flight, who stood in two neat rows facing the makeshift charnel.
The bottom lip of one young woman in baggy fatigues trembled, and then she began to cry hysterically, her head bobbing up and down.
A chaplain intoned: "There is no greater love that can be displayed than for a person to lay down their life for others."
Another woman started to cry, and soon two men standing nearby joined her.
The chaplain continued: "His love is proven by this ultimate sacrifice."
The legs of several airmen buckled slightly. Within a few minutes, nearly the entire flight was sobbing uncontrollably. The face of Staff Sgt. Kyle Luker turned bright red as tears streamed down his cheeks.

DAVID M. UNGER, died October 17, 2006, aged 21
Down a dirt road in rural Kansas, when President Bush spoke today of the number of American service members killed in Iraq, each of those numbers had a name, CBS News national correspondent Byron Pitts reports.
"My son died in a country that I have no idea, really, why we're even there," Diana Unger says.
Her son, Cpl. David Unger of Leavenworth, Kan., was married to his high school sweetheart and was the father of two kids -- including a baby just 20 months old. He had a mom, a stepdad, two brothers and a l3-year-old sister who adored him.
"It's different for every person to handle," says Jeremy Unger, David's brother, with tears on his face. "He was my older brother. I looked up to him a lot. It's just hard."
And it was also hard, they said, listening to President Bush this morning.
When the president said he understood how tough the Iraq battle was, some of Unger's family had a physical reaction.
"Unless he puts his daughters over there and he has that real fear everyday of not wanting to turn on the television, that fear that gets into your heart and your head, he can't fathom what that means," Diana says.

ERIC W. HERZBERG, died October 21, 2006, aged 20
The pastor wasn't sure he should share the story with those attending the fallen Marine's funeral service, but he said the young man's mother encouraged him to do so.
"Just before he left for Iraq he came home, to be with family and get ready," he said. "After Mass he asked for a blessing. We talked, but he said he wanted to talk a little bit more."
The young Marine told his pastor that he and a few of his friends "had changed their minds about our effort in Iraq."
He said he no longer believed in the war in Iraq, and he wanted to know what to do.
The 20-year-old's pastor said he was flustered.
"I thought, you know exactly what to do, what you're going to do," Father Cieri said. "Then I told him, `Eric, we love you. Do your duty.' " He did.

When two Army captains came to his door Sunday with the news of his son's death, they told Robert Rogers that the secretary of the Army expresses his condolences. Rogers said he thought, "He doesn't even know who my son is."
