Winter Solstice is upon us --at exactly 11:19 pm.
I love the symbolism of the Winter Solstice: Though it’s the beginning of winter, it’s also the day when the days begin to get longer; sunset is later and later; sunrise is earlier and earlier. The Solstice is an annual version of Dr. King’s “The Arc of the Moral Universe is Long, but it bends toward justice.”
Our early ancestors, watching the daylight hours shrink, feared darkness would overtake light completely. But then, as the days inched longer, they ecstatically greeted its resurgence. We have the spirit of those ancestors within us, and have sorely needed that spirit the last three years.
This year, at the solstice, we can see signs of light and hope:
But the symbolic return of light isn’t enough without action, so upon the Solstice, let’s pledge to continue and expand the work we are doing to bend toward justice — registering voters, contributing when we can, organizing, demonstrating, and trying to bring light to the world in our everyday lives.
