The ICJ was deliberating about a case brought to it by Nicaragua regarding the urgent need to halt German arms transfers to Israel. Germany is the second largest arms supplier to Israel after the United States.
Marlise Simons of the NYT opines, “If the Court decides that arms supplying nations share responsibility for the illegal use of such military aid by the recipient nation, such a ruling would imply arms supplying nations could be held liable provided they are full parties to the Genocide Convention.” www.nytimes.com/... Both Nicaragua and Germany are full parties to the Convention. Nicaragua contends that , “German arms supplies not only risk facilitating genocide, but also contribute to violations of the Geneva Conventions, which include the obligation to protect civilians during military hostilities.” We shall see whether the corpus of international law in this area will be fortified by today’s ruling.
