More technically accurate, the quilt is really for both Shortfinals and his beloved Jan. They have been together 33 years.
Both have health problems, but Jan has just been diagnosed with an aggressive invasive cancer. I described the situation in a diary about Shortfinals’ heartbreak.
Gwennedd had just finished a beautiful quilt, then offered it up as a contribution for Jan and Shortfinals in their time of need. This community came together to provide inscriptions and well wishes for both of them. Story of the quilt is found here and here.
I talked with him today. Jan just finished a chemotherapy infusion that lasted 49-hours. He hardly left her side, staying at the cancer treatment center until the staff made him leave at the end of visiting hours. He sounded exhausted, mentally and physically.
He is going to take her home now, and is making preparations.
The quilt is not only practical, Jan pointed out that it’s an art piece that should be displayed as a wall hanging. He pointed out that their apartment is too small to display it in full. I reminded him that it was to keep both of them wrapped in love during the chilly New England fall and winter.
He tells me he tried to read the inscriptions to Jan, but seems it got “way too dusty in there” for him to see clearly. He plans to try again when he is up to it.
The quilt on her hospital bed:
They both asked me to express their heartfelt thanks for the funds raised for them. Those gifts allowed Shortfinals to buy a good quality blender for food preparation. Jan’s diet is severely restricted. She is only able to eat puréed food, so the blender is essential.
She went back home this evening.
Thanks again, to everyone who offered support, and especial thanks to Gwennedd.
Peace out...
