Many folks take the Sunday during Memorial Day weekend to relax, spend time with family, or maybe barbecue. Some may go away for the weekend to recharge and relax as Summer begins.
Not in the age of Trump.
Several Indivisible groups throughout Northern Virginia organized a protest today at the Trump National Golf Course in Sterling, Virginia. As today was a day of a golf tournament, protesters from the D.C — Virginia — Maryland Metro area assembled to rally against the PGA and Kitchenaid for their continued support of Trump’s golf club here.
The official name of the protest was PGA (Please Go Away) Protest.
Susan Platt — one of the three Democratic Candidates for Lieutenant Governor — organized a demonstration which led into the PGA protest. Folks from the Sterling area gathered a few blocks from the entrance of the golf course in order to show solidarity with the Indivisible groups, and raise awareness of the impending protest.
Candidates for the House of Delegates Wendy Gooditus, Tia Walbridge and Ken Boddye (me!) were also in attendance. A representative from the Tom Perriello for Governor campaign was also present, as was a candidate for Congress, Dave Hanson.
At the end of Susan Platt’s event, we all marched down to the entrance to the actual golf course. We could only get as far as across the street, but we made an impact: folks driving by either voiced their support or opposition, and it wasn’t long before the Indivisible groups showed up. By 1:00 PM, a couple hundred people had gathered, and nearly matched the number of folks attending the tournament.
Trump and the GOP wants us to get tired, go back to sleep, or become as apathetic and as cruel as they are. We’re not going to let that happen.
KitchenAid and the PGA are unlikely to withdraw their support for Trump’s golf club anytime soon, but this is the first step. Anyone who has investments in corporations that support them should consider divesting. We have to protests with not only signs, but our wallets too.
And, of course, at the ballot box by getting out to vote on June 13th and November 7th. Absentee voting has already started for the June 13th primary, so please get out and vote!
