Recently the town of Lynchburg held a forum to discuss poverty in the city and region. Lynchburg has one of the highest poverty rates in the state of Virginia. This is the central theme of my platform. Poverty touches every social-political issue. From healthcare to jobs and the workforce, to education and economic development, to the environment and childcare, poverty literally affects each of our lives in one way or another.
My hope as the delegate for the 23rd district is to speak to the compassionate side of people so that they can support my efforts to end poverty in my district, and make my area as prosperous as other parts of the state of Virginia and the country. I believe that this is possible by addressing each of these issues individually while keeping in mind the many constituents that fall below the poverty line. Helping the poor is something that crosses party lines, religious lines, social lines, and more. We are obligated as a modern society to lift each other up whenever possible and look out for our neighbors.
As our national government starts to pour more money into cushioning the rich, and lifting up the Wall Street crowd, it is even more important to focus on lifting up the lower classes. Our society cannot thrive by benefiting only the most wealthy.
