"When they go low, we go high." Here is a letter from a voter in the 56th and my response.
Why should I have to pay more taxes to pay for rare surgeries like your child had. If you want the surgery you pay for it. If you want a Mercedes should I have to pay for it? No and if you can't afford it I'm sorry but that's how life works. Get a better job that pays better or get a loan. It's not right to ask the taxpayers pay for it. This mentality people have of entitlement is crazy. If I want a new tool or truck I work harder or take another job at night but I wouldn't ask taxpayers to pay for it. I'm sorry about your child but keyword it's your child not mine. And it's your responsibility to provide for it not mine. It's why I don't have children I can't afford them because of all the taxes. That's being responsible.

My response:
Dear Mr. XXXXX,
Thank you for your thoughtful letter regarding my children.
Let me share some facts with you.
1. No one except my husband and I and our insurance company have ever paid for care for our ill children. Nor have we expected anyone to do so.
2. I am not asking for tax payers to pay our medical bills for us.
3. Children are not cars they are humans who are worthy of care. Cars are discretionary spending. I will tell you, since you do not know, that when you have children the love you feel for them is the most intense kind of love there is. Nothing is more important than their well being. In our case, they were born perfectly healthy. They developed a disease when they were in elementary school and middle school. You see, sometimes in life things don't go perfectly. Intimating that I shouldn't have had them because of my financial situation is wrong headed, rude and ignorant of the situation. I take my responsibility for their care very seriously. This is why I am trying to make sure they are not discriminated against because of a pre existing condition that is no fault of their own.
4. I would implore you to look at what I do for a living. I am not looking for a hand out, I try to make communities better for others. Learn More Here
5. What I am suggesting (rather than bill payment) are laws which make it harder for sick people to be discriminated against by their insurance companies. It is really that simple.
I hope you are well and fit. I hope you are never sick even a day in your life. However, should you ever find yourself in a situation where you are in serious need of long term care, maybe you will benefit from my efforts to make sure you can access the care you need without being forced to make a choice between food, rent, your tools, or your truck.
Very best to you,
Lizzie Drucker-Basch VA 56 HOD
