It’s official — Jacqueline Smith will be the next Clerk of the Circuit Court servicing Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park!
With 100% of precincts reporting, the final vote count is as follows:
Candidate |
Total |
Percent |
Jacqueline C. Smith |
13,905 |
53.93 |
Jackson Hunter Miller |
11,871 |
46.04 |
Yes, over 2,000 votes between them which accounts for an almost 8% spread. The turnout was low (which is what the Republicans wanted) but it was much closer to 9% when they were projecting 5%. Our folks came out where they needed to while the Republican vote was depressed in comparison to previous elections.
Here’s the kicker, take a look at the difference in campaign funds raised:
Candidate Raised
Miller, Jackson (R) $157,806
Smith, Jacqueline (D) $35,534
Miller (a sitting state delegate in leadership) transferred $140,000 from his Delegate re-election war chest, outspent Smith nearly 5-to-1 and still lost.
This is how we know people power trumps money power, folks, and how we prove that we stand for progress. Prince William went for Hillary last year, and now it went for Jacqueline Smith.
It’s a blue county, and the Republicans know it now and will know it again in November.

After one of the local state senators did some number crunching, we have some great new metrics:
- Initial numbers suggest Jackie was outspent 7 to 1 in the race - $235K to $36K
- Over 60% of Jackie's 2,034 vote-margin (before absentees) came out of the 36th Senate District - 1,299 votes.
- Absentee turnout was way up - nearly 2,000 votes or 8% were cast early - that is unheard of in special elections.
- Jackie won the absentee vote by 20% while only winning the County by 10% - in other words, Democrats were motivated.
- That makes two Democrats to win Countywide in PWC in last 18 months after about a 20 year hiatus.
