Grey Lady
J. Dennis Hastert, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, was paying a man to not say publicly that Mr. Hastert had sexually abused him decades ago, according to two people briefed on the evidence uncovered in an F.B.I. investigation into the payments.
Two people. The NYT still waits for independent confirmation.
At the White House, Josh Earnest, the press secretary, put partisan distinctions aside. “There’s nobody here who derives any pleasure from hearing about the former speaker’s legal troubles,” he said.
I agree with this. It's a fascinating and sordid tale, and I have zero sympathy for Dennis Hastert, who seems to be quite the piece of work. But I feel no glee learning of lives destroyed.
