Voters go to the polls in two states today, but a substantial number of votes will not be tabulated in Alaska tonight. The Last Frontier allows mail-in ballots postmarked by Tuesday to be counted if they're received through the end of the month. State election officials say they plan to have updated results on Aug. 23 and Aug. 26, with final numbers on Aug. 31.
After all the votes are tabulated in the race to succeed the late Republican Rep. Don Young as Alaska’s only House member, which is being conducted using ranked-choice voting, officials will conduct an instant runoff to reallocate the third-place finisher's votes to the two remaining candidates should no one win an outright majority in the initial tally.
Alaska also will be holding a top-four primary tonight for statewide and legislative offices, including for a full term for Young’s seat. All candidates will compete on one ballot, and the four contenders with the most votes, regardless of party, will advance to a Nov. 8 instant-runoff election.
