We know that at best, the discovery that Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort met with a pro-Kremlin lawyer in hopes of getting dirt on Hillary was improper at best. But while digging into this at Liberal America, I noticed that one of Trump’s loudest critics thinks it may go further than that. From where he’s sitting, it amounts to treason.
Richard Painter, the former ethics counsel for Bush 43, is best known for turning the hot lights on Trump’s blatant disregard for the Emoluments Clause. But when he heard the new details about Donald Jr.’s meeting, he hit the ceiling.
Painter went further in an interview with MSNBC earlier tonight. He claimed that no one tries to get oppo from a foreign country known to have espionage operations in this country unless you want to be “accused of treason.” Click over to my piece at Liberal America to watch it.
So that meeting was grossly inappropriate at best, and treasonous at worst. No wonder we haven’t seen any angry tweets from a Trump since this story broke.
