Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post, from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.
This series was conceived as a haven where folks can drop in to share conversation, ideas, weather reports, and music. Feel free to leave a note, comment, picture, or tune. As always the diarist gets to sleep in, and may show up long after the post is published. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.
Pull up a chair, get your cup of tea, coffee, or other favorite morning beverage and join us for a neighborly start to the day ahead.
Some days are less interesting than others. I have had my share of interesting times, and the scars to show for it. I have met many interesting people along the way.
This week ain’t it. For a change, we have had a boring week. Today was no exception. It has been a day of doing a few chores, petting the feral kitties (they won’t let Socks touch them), and taking out trash. Didn’t even cook. Thank goodness for frozen dinners on days like this.
There is a story behind the TV dinner. I recall the first time I saw one sometime about 1958 or 1959, but they had to be heated in the oven. They were too expensive for us on our meager income, and besides, they took up way too much storage space in the tiny freezer on top of our small refrigerator. We didn’t get a microwave until 1980. It was huge, extremely expensive, and didn’t work all that well. I ended up donating it to Goodwill when we moved.
The origin of TV dinners was the result of a logistical miscalculation. The explanation:
I remember back when you were actually served a meal to coach class passengers on an airliner. Most of those meals were similar to TV dinners, but usually far better quality and taste. Nowadays, you can’t even get peanuts. They give you a tiny packet of semi-fresh pretzels and a small drink unless you fly first class.
ZZ Top recorded an ode to TV Dinners.
