I’m a liberal Democrat married to a republican trump supporter so I have an inside look at the thinking of trumpers. My husband, a college educated man, isn’t a radical but he doesn’t believe trump has done any of the bad stuff he’s been accused of. He hasn’t heard of all of it, just the biggest because he only watches Fox. We can’t talk about it without damaging our marriage so we talk little.
He buys all the propaganda against Democrats and has been telling me that democrats have covered up Hillary’s crimes and have been protecting her from prosecution all this time. I would ask him if Hillary was a criminal and did all that republicans have accused her of why hasn’t she been prosecuted. Same answer every time, because Dems are protecting Hillary (all the way to the top no matter how many republicans currently held power all the way to the top). Even though Dems have had no power to stop republicans who control government from going after her and locking her up. And not to mention the reason trump hasn’t paid for his crimes is because republicans really have been protecting him.
For the last 4 years when I’d tell my husband what trump had done, knowing he wasn’t hearing it on Fox, he’d say if trump did all that they would have gotten him by now. At the time I didn’t know that Barr had been killing all the investigations of trumps criminality so I had no comeback to his statement/belief. But still, after I learned that and pointed it out, husband kept saying they don’t have anything on trump or they’d go after him. That didn’t get through to him.
So I had a little breakthrough when my husband defended trump’s loss as stolen by fraudulent voting and Democrats’ cheating. He even repeated stuff he’d heard on Fox fake news like democrats were staging a government coup/voter fraud, etc.... I told him republicans and trump had no evidence of that. He said they did. Evidently he didn’t know about all the law suits trump had filed and at the time had lost around 30. And him not knowing that is the main reason I’m writing this.
I informed him that trump had already lost 30 cases because of “no evidence” and that lawyers can lose their license if they file too many cases without any evidence and that judges were throwing them out because trump had no evidence of fraud by anyone. AND I also thought, thank goodness, to inform him that THAT’S why Hillary wasn’t charged and “locked up” for fake crimes/right wing propaganda against her. There was no “evidence” to take to court. Then, at that moment it dawned on me that that’s why it’s so important to make sure trump pays for what he’s done and justice is served for the American people.
More simply put, my husband (AND ALL THE TRUMPERS I presume) doesn’t believe anything bad he hears about trump because trump never pays for or is held accountable for his behavior or crimes. And that I believe is the key to breaking this stranglehold trump has on 74 million Americans who voted for him. He must be prosecuted and punished (along with everyone who enabled/aided him) for all he has done to America and our government. Not just for the good and healing of our country but to get through to the nazis and white supremacists. If they see trump as a martyr when he’s in prison so be it. Holding him accountable will make a believer out of some and surely change some minds.
I know all the ifs ands and buts to my theory/opinion but no matter what is said and done trump hasn’t been proven in (for all to see leaving no doubt/debate/argument) (thanks to Barr) to be criminal nor paid a price yet. And as long as that remains he will be innocent in the eyes of the lock-up-Hillary crowd. He has to be exposed so thoroughly that even Fox fake news has to report and talk about it accurately. I know I’m rambling about something that could be said in a sentence or two if I were a good writer. But trump must be held accountable because “justice matters” as Glenn Kirschner says, and to get through to the trumpers who are supporting such a sick criminal and break the spell he has over them.
