For those of you who did not study history, Herbert Hoover was President when the Great Depression began.
On Oct. 25, 1929, Herbert Hoover declared, "The fundamental business of the country, that is the production and distribution of commodities, is on a sound and prosperous basis."
The day before Hoover insisted that the fundamentals were strong was the day that came to be known as Black Thursday, when in heavy trading the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost about 9 percent of its value.
American Prospect: McCain's Dangerous Do-Nothing Economics
Any wonder why John McCain is running from his statement that the "the fundamentals of our economy are strong?" He can run, but he cannot hide. More, after the fold.
How many times has McCain said this?
Well: On June 5, 2008, he said it.

DNC Releases New Web Video: 'Fundamentally Strong?'
For your viewing pleasure from the DNC:
Fundamentally Strong?
Barack Obama was right earlier this week when he said, we know what you meant, John, because you've said it so many times:
"A few hours later, after he said this, this morning he said this, 'The fundamentals of the economy are strong,' John McCain’s campaign sent him back out to clean up his remarks," Obama said to the crowd at the Colorado State Fair Grounds grandstand. "And he explained that what he really meant, what he really meant to say was that American workers are strong."
snip
"Now, come on, Sen. McCain!" Obama said. "We know you meant what you said the first time because you’ve said it before. You said it just a few weeks ago. And your chief economic advisor -- the man who wrote your economic plan -- said that we’re in a 'mental recession;' that this is all in our heads; that we’re a nation of whiners. That's what he called you, a nation of whiners!...

Now, most folks don't know much about Hoover, but they do know bullshit when they hear it.
McCain is the new Hoover. People can make the connection.
It's our road to victory. Keep hitting John McCain on the economy. Over and over and over.
And never let him forget his statement that the fundamentals of the economy are sound. As we experience economic meltdown, lay it at Hoover-McCain's feet.
Update I: From Inland in the comments: Bush and McCain talking fundamentals of the economy!!!
