No one.
No one is lying.
They both remember the conversation slightly differently.
We have all had that happen to us — we have a fight with someone we care about and then after the fight, we fight about who said what. The other person insists that we said something we don’t think we said or that we used a tone we don’t think we used.
How can that happen? Surely someone must be lying?
Nope. Memory sucks. All memory is what psychologist called “reconstructed” to some degree or another. All memory.
Your mind isn’t like a library where you can pull out an exact transcript of a memory, instead memory is reconstructed from small things you remember plus your theories of how the event might have taken place (such as your theories about what you are like and what the other person is like and what conversations tend to be like).
Every memory works that way to some degree or another. That is just how the human mind works.
So when Warren remembers Sanders saying that a woman can’t win and Sanders remembers talking generally about the forces that would make it hard for someone to win, they are both remembering parts of the conversation and just reconstructing the whole conversation in slightly different ways. She might remember one particular sentence he said and he may remember others.
The important part of this is that there is no reason to believe that either of them is lying about this. Most likely, neither of them is.
Unfortunately, people all over are picking sides in this fight that shouldn’t be a fight. And worse, they are starting to like Warren or Sanders much less because of it.
My friends, this is the first in a series of MANY things that will happen in this primary season that have the potential to tear us apart and let Trump win re-election. If this event made you like Sanders or Warren less because they had a spat with Warren or Sanders, I beg you to reconsider.
These kinds of disagreements happen among the best of friends.
And this kind of argument is going to happen more and more among the candidates as we get closer to just one person.
It is human nature to start to hate a competitor. In other words, it is in our very nature to start hating Warren if you love Sanders and start hating Sanders if you love Warren.
Fight against that nature. Keep reminding yourself of the great things about every single person who was on that stage last night. We need to stay united to win.
Eyes on the prize.
