President Trump released his detailed budget for 2018, and boy is it a doozy. Looking past the abhorrent cuts to Medicaid, the NIH, State Department, and other vital programs, there is one that stands out to me the most. The new budget proposes a $193B cut to food stamps over the next ten years. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides assistance to over 44 million Americans, and up to 22 thousand of these are service men and women and their families currently in our Armed Forces.
The proposed budget sees an increase in almost 10% to the Defense budget, where we already spend more than the next eight countries combined. The administration claims to do this in the name of protecting Americans, while at the same time slashing our social safety net, stripping healthcare away from millions, and even taking food out of the hands of our military. Congressman Wittman is throwing his support in with this budget, wanting to build more aircraft carriers at the same time he works to strip $800B in Medicaid funding from our most vulnerable Americans.
Congressman Wittman has shown he is out of touch with what Americans want, and that he is in congress to do whatever President Trump needs him to. Initially a no on the American Health Care Act, he waited for the bill to get more cruel before endorsing it, becoming one of the key swing votes that passed the bill through the house. It’s time for a change in the First Congressional District.
