Indiana has canceled nearly half a million voter registrations since November, claiming that it’s just a overdue clean-up effort, but Jason Kander—now a voting rights advocate after his time as Missouri secretary of state and a Senate candidate—has questions. “Secretary Lawson canceled the registrations of about 10 percent of the voters in her state, so questions should certainly be asked about her process,” Kander said in a statement, continuing:
“Obviously states should have the most accurate voter lists possible, but that process should be fair and done carefully so not a single eligible voter improperly loses the ability to vote. Instead of allowing local election authorities to do their jobs and administer their voter lists as they have in the past, Secretary Lawson unilaterally took this action on her own. Today we are asking important questions of Secretary Lawson to help ensure her process didn’t disenfranchise anyone in her state.”
Kander’s group, Let America Vote, has made an open records request looking for information on how Lawson carried out the purge and is also asking for a list of the people whose registrations were canceled. It’s good to have people like Kander on the case.
