When Trump spread his contempt of women to hurt us internationally by reinstating the global gag rule, the Netherlands said they’ll step in and try to minimize the damage. The Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen announced that they are moving to create an international fund that’d support initiatives that provide international reproductive health care in developing countries.
This is a great counter to Trump’s order, since the U.S. will prevent organizations that even dare utter the word abortion (the legal, routine medical procedure) as an option from getting government funding. It sounds like Minister Ploumen really gets it. The Independent reports:
She told colleagues: “This has far-reaching consequences. First of all, for all those women who have to make, if they want to have a child, a choice, but also for their husbands and children and society as a whole. Banning abortion does not lead to fewer abortions. It leads to more irresponsible practices in back rooms and more maternal deaths.”
Wow, a leader in touch with reality. I miss having a government that uses factual information.
