The National Center For Women and Policing is reporting that two different studies show that fully 40% of cop families experience domestic violence. Among older more experienced officers, that number drops to 24%. In the general population, it's 10%.
And like the abuse we’ve seen in the Catholic Church, police departments are engaged in what appears to be widespread efforts to protect abusive officers, subjecting the wives of officers to a special kind of horror where they can't expect even the paltry protections offered to average women.
Four in ten isn't just a few bad apples. It's a sign that when our leaders tell us that the “vast majority” of officers are good decent non-violent heroes, they aren't telling us the truth. Instead, it seems far more likely that the profession of being a police officer is something that draws abusive violent men to it, because like with pedophile priests, they know that they will be protected from facing their crimes:
Crimes against blacks, the poor, and as we now know: America’s women too.
So don't tell us it's just a few bad apples. Almost half of our police officers are according to these studies actually dangerous abusive criminals who are being protected by our local governments (often led by Republicans) because they're abusing all the “right” kinds of people.
