I urge those in our community to send a get well card to Jimmy Carter. Just address it to Jimmy Carter, Plains, GA, 31780 -- it will get to him and his family and it will be appreciated. While he maintains an office in Atlanta, President Carter lives about a block or two from the small Post Office in Plains.
It's important for anyone who believes in peace and progressive progress to honor Jimmy Carter. This man was the greatest Peacemaker ever to be President. He did more for Peace in the Middle East than all the other politicians over the last 40 years combined. He passed the Panama Canal treaties -- a foundation for peace in our hemisphere. He has brokered Peace settlements in countless countries around the world. Name me a President who ever waged Peace more consistently and effectively than Carter.
I could go on for pages about the good things Carter has accomplished. He preserved more wilderness than any President other than Teddy Roosevelt. He stood up for civil rights when is was very risky in South Georgia and he hung a portrait of Martin Luther King in the Georgia Capitol and declared at his Gov. inaugural that "The time for segregation is over..." Carter was WAY ahead of his time on energy and environmental policy. If we had listened more to Carter, there would be trillions of tons of less carbon in our atmosphere. Truly, the climate was a big loser in the election of 1980. Through his work with the Carter Center two tropical diseases have virtually been eliminated in Africa. He has done so much to ease human suffering.
Anyway, if you send a card to Carter it will be appreciated in Plains. This great Peacemaker should know that his life has been so worthy and that most Americans regard him as an inspiration. President Carter has a life that matters, a lot.
Also, President Carter's enduring legacy is the work of the Carter Center. I plan to make a donation to the Carter Center this year.
