Strom Thurmond's son, Paul Thurmond, has made a significant statement on how South Carolina and the nation should move forward in the aftermath of the AME Church tragedy in Charleston.
For those who don't know, Strom Thurmond was one of the most notorious segregationists of the American South and is probably more responsible than anyone in keeping alive the ideas that the Confederate flag represent.
Well, his son, Paul, who is a state senator from Charleston and was a colleague of Clementa Pinckney, is having no more of it:
“I am aware of my heritage,” Thurmond said of his family’s place in S.C. history, and specifically the Civil War. Referring to slavery and the War’s role in preserving it, Thurmond said, “I am not proud of this heritage. These practices were inhumane and wrong, wrong, wrong.”

I think state senator Thurmond could be a key to resolving this problem and he will be an important voice in the weeks and months ahead.
“It is time to acknowledge our past, atone for our sins, and work for a better future,” the Charleston Republican said. “That future cannot be built on symbols of war, hate, and divisiveness.”
