Yup. You read that right. The Los Angeles School Police Dept. has grenade launchers. Because sticking kids in detention just wasn't working out, I guess.
According to The L.A. Times:
Los Angeles Unified school police officials said Tuesday that the department will relinquish some of the military weaponry it acquired through a federal program that furnishes local law enforcement with surplus equipment. The move comes as education and civil rights groups have called on the U.S. Department of Defense to halt the practice for schools.
The Los Angeles School Police Department, which serves the nation's second-largest school system, will return three grenade launchers...
Phew. That's a relief.
...but intends to keep 61 rifles and a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected armored vehicle it received through the program.
Oh, brother...
Schoolkids; immigrants; women; black people; the elderly; terrorists; criminals; dog-owners...y'know, it might just be easier if American police departments told us who they're not at war with. Assuming, of course, that there is anyone that they're not at war with.
We'd appreciate the heads-up. Thanks.
