About 20,000 lions remain in all of Africa, according to estimates. The scientists projected that there was a 67 percent chance that the number of lions in Central and West Africa would drop by half within two decades. In East Africa, where some populations, like the lions in Serengeti National Park, have remained stable, the probability was 37 percent.
Thompson’s rise to the Senate was atypical. He had never before held public office, but he overwhelmingly won a 1994 special election for Al Gore’s old Senate seat after connecting with voters. In 1996 he easily won a six-year term. Thompson’s key prop was a red pickup truck that he used to crisscross the state throughout the campaign. In the end, Thompson captured 60 percent of the vote against then-Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper.

"American Indians and Alaska Natives enrich every aspect of our country. As the first to live on this land," President Barack Obama said in his proclamation for National Native American Heritage Month. "Native Americans and their traditions and values inspired—and continue to inspire—the ideals of self-governance and determination that are the framework of our Nation." The proclamation references "unfortunate chapters of violence, discrimination, and deprivation" inflicted upon the first Americans. Obama said his administration is taking steps to reverse centuries of damage.
